Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need a Business Analyst on Digital / IT projects?
Any Digital / IT initiatives in the business require a deep understanding of how the business operates currently (As- Is) as well as the vision and understanding of where the business is heading in the future (To – Be). This is where the Business Analyst comes in.
We have AI and AI can do the tasks of a Business Analyst faster, cheaper, and more efficiently?
It is true that AI can help and speed up many tasks on a digital project. What AI cannot do however, is add that all necessary human touch. The following are a few of the things that AI certainly cannot do:
- Manage stakeholders
- Apply Emotional Intelligence to navigate relationships and manage stakeholder expectations
- Assimilate past experiences into the current project
- Facilitate workshops etc.
The Developers have the best understanding of the solution as they alone are coding it – are they not best placed to take on the role of a Business Analyst?
While the developers are certainly most familiar with the solution and its technical capability, there are some fundamental challenges placed in front of them. Namely, the Business Analyst is the one that excels at managing stakeholders and their expectations. Requirements elicitation is a special skill and unless a developer is trained in it or knows how to do it, requirements may be missed or misinterpreted. Business Analysts have a strong understanding of business processes whereas developers have a more technical understanding of the same. Communication with stakeholders of various capabilities may also present a challenge for developers, if they are unable to explain concepts in plain language. The last but not least challenge could be time – a developer doing business analyst job could lead to overwork and burnout.
There is a lot of overlap between Project Manager and Business Analyst roles – why can’t I get one to do both roles?
It is true that there is a lot of overlap between the two roles however there are distinct tasks and skillsets that both of these roles require and they also focus on different aspects of a project. Combining these roles can lead to challenges in workload management, skillset application, and maintaining quality and accountability. In most cases, it is more effective to keep these roles separate to ensure both project success and the delivery of solutions that meet business needs.
I can hire a Business Analyst for the testing and training only, right?
Business Analyst should be involved in the project from the start. They are the ones who make sure that the requirements are thoroughly understood and communicated to all parties. Many project failures trace back to poor requirements understanding or misinterpretation.
Why analyze the solution when our users know what the solution must do for them?
While the Subject Matter Experts may provide what the solution must do, it is always good to challenge the though process behind it. This way, the scenario of: 'The way we always do things.' can be avoided. Without analysis, the solution may be appropriate for a small portion of users and useless for the rest of the user base. Additionally, the new solution can end up merely running old processes faster instead of facilitating modernization and future proofing the business.
Why do we need to review and map our old process first?
Business process mapping highlights inefficiencies and improvement opportunities and gets your organization thinking about the way it wants to operate going forward. Employees know their current ways of working and pain points well, so this is always the place to start.
The best of breed solution will solve all our problems, right?
While best of breed will definitely address a lot of pain points, it is by no means a panacea for all problems: e.g.: a solution will not solve poor business processes. The best course of action is to define requirements first and search for a solution based on a defined list of requirements.
